Solids and Sand: What They Do to Pump Performance

Sand cuts clearance open, packs intakes, sticks valves. Here is what changes in the pump and what to do about it.

Solids in the produced fluid do three specific things to a rod pump. They abrade clearances open. They pack intakes and passages. They hang up valves and plungers. Each has a distinct signature on production and cards, and each has a different fix. Understanding which one you are dealing with determines whether the right response is a different pump, a screen, or an intervention upstream of the pump entirely.

Abrasion: Opening Clearances

Plunger-to-barrel clearance is the critical tolerance. Designed at 0.002 to 0.005 inches for standard service. Sand cuts that open over time. Slippage increases. Volumetric efficiency drops. Downhole card shows rising slippage signature - flatter transitions, less area, gradually declining production at constant pump and inflow.

Fix: pumps with hardened inserts or chrome-plated barrels resist abrasion and extend run life 2 to 5 times over standard. Carbon-fiber-lined barrels are an option for the most abrasive service. Economics usually justify the premium within one avoided workover.

Packing: Restricting Flow

Sand settles in intake, around the standing valve, in gas separators. Flow path restricts. Pump starves even with adequate annular fluid level. Fluid level shot shows high submergence, downhole card shows poor fillage.

Fix: sand anchors below the pump intake, proper rathole for sand settlement, screens on high-sand wells. Keeping sand out of the pump is easier than getting it out once it arrives.

Sticking: Valves and Plungers

Sand grains lodge in valve seats preventing closure. Plungers can hang up if debris accumulates around the plunger body. Symptoms range from intermittent fillage drops to complete pump failure. Card shapes become erratic.

Fix: valve designs with larger ball travel and self-clearing action handle solids better. Pump materials matched to the service - stainless and chrome over soft brass in abrasive environments. Regular pull-and-clean on the worst wells.

When Rod Pumps Are Not the Right Choice

Heavily sand-producing wells sometimes exceed what rod pumps handle economically. PC pumps have different sand tolerance envelopes. ESPs with sand-handling trim packages too. The decision is economic - at what sand rate does the rod pump workover frequency outweigh the savings from keeping rod lift running. That varies by field but the breakeven is knowable with a year of pull data.

Bottom Line

Sand does three things: abrades clearances, packs flow paths, sticks valves. Three distinct signatures, three different fix sets, one common theme - keeping sand out of the pump is cheaper than handling it in the pump. Sand anchors, proper rathole, and appropriate pump metallurgy handle most situations. When they don't, the lift method may be the wrong one for the well.
